With me … or not?
January 16, 2014 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

The Christmas holiday I find is always a good time to take stock on what has happened during the year and also start to plan the coming year in terms of what the priorities will be and what work I will be pushing towards. Over the past months I’ve certainly been working towards doing more fashion and commercial, but also moving into product photography.   Some avenues of photography that I’ve previously been in appear to be becoming almost what feels like a closed shop as a number of  photographers flood the market with cheap work and in so doing devalue the work of others and what the magazines are prepared to pay. So by exploring new markets, not only will it help channel my creativity in a different way, it may well open up new work if I build up the relevant skills and also make the right contacts with magazines and companies. I think also that sometimes we do work and/or styles because that is what people always expect us to do.  This year is going to be different, it’s going to be a year of what I want to do ….. so you’re either with me or you’re not.  And if […]

Shooting Amber Tutton with the X-E1
July 8, 2013 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

When you’ve got great models to work with, the ideas start to flow both before the day and during.  Amber is one of those models where I definitely get “in the zone” and experiment to produce something that I think would benefit my portfolio.  The day was a little different to the norm though as I make the transition from DSLR to a mirrorless camera setup.  Here was my first model shoot with the Fuji X-E1 and it’s APS-C sensor. I have the Lumix GH3 camera, a micro 4/3rds sensor and fantastic camera for stills and particularly for video (which is why I got it in the first place).  Presently I have the Olympus 45mm f1.8 lens and the Lumix 20mm f1.7 lens, both great lenses and so compact in size.  My next logical purchase was to get the 12-35mm f2.8 Lumix, but priced at £899 needed careful consideration before taking the leap.    But here’s the rub that made me consider an alternative solution. I was finding the Lumix a little noisy for some of the natural light stills work that I do in the studio.  When I say noisy, I mean probably from about 800 ISO upwards and […]

Lily J Clothing
December 31, 2012 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

On my recent trip to the NEC Clothes Show, I mentioned previously that one of the stalls that particularly stood out for me was Lily-J, a range of clothing that is feminine, fashionable and affordable. A winning combination obviously. I spent quite a time on that stall, looking at clothes and accessories that were very feminine I thought, with lots of beige and lace and crochet looking work on the designs that I thought would be perfect for some ideas I’ve got coming up. Was also nice to chat to one of the young ladies that were running the stall about some of their designs. All very nice indeed, particularly when the prices were very reasonable indeed. My plan was to go down to Camden during the Christmas break to get some of their outfits, but the weather has been horrible and I wanted to do quite a bit on the trip to London so making a full day of it. So I reckon a trip needed down to Camden to the Lily-J shop during January.

Clothes Show 2012
December 10, 2012 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

Well, the Clothes Show is over for another year, I just love going along to the show at the NEC and feeling part of the scene, taking photos, but more importantly getting ideas for my forthcoming shoots. There were many stalls selling t-shirts and more grungy stuff, but that wasn’t really what I was looking for. Also whilst there were a number of vintage and retro clothing shops on display they were mostly unfortunately at very modern prices ie. too expensive. There was one stall that really took my eye though and that was Lily.J from Camden in London and I think I’ll do another chat post about my thoughts on that. So what’s next after the Clothes Show then, well it’s got to be London Fashion Week in Feb 2013 so I’d better get my thoughts together on that and get something organised.
